Front Cover Guidelines

• The dentistry must be reviewed and accepted prior to the submission of a photo shoot. Include “before” and “after” images of the close-up retracted view of the teeth and full face (300 ppi digital image is preferred; however 35-mm slides are acceptable for this purpose only).
• Include an explanation of the treatment that was done for the patient, as well as the name, company, city, and state of each of the following people: dentist, laboratory technician, and photographer.

Photoshoot for the Cover Shots

To be considered for the front cover of the Journal of Cosmetic Dentistry (JCD), photos from your photographer must follow these criteria:

• For digital images, send all original files. The larger the mega-pixel of the camera the better; nothing lower than 16.7 mb is ideal. Shoot RAW images if at all possible. The cover is printed at a high resolution; the images need to be 400 pixels per inch (ppi) or 300 ppi. Please make them large enough to bleed off the edges if needed, the JCD measures 8.875” x 11.375” with the bleed and we would prefer to place these at 100%. Do not crop images too closely, send the entire shoot, and do not edit the images.
• We prefer images with a non-distracting background, such as white or other solid colors; and images that are not cropped too closely to the figure. This gives us room to crop in the design process as needed. Clothing, jewelry, and makeup should be non-distracting as well. These should not be glamour shots—the photographs should focus on a beautiful smile!
• Have your photographer take various poses, which show more than just the patient’s face. Send us multiple submissions of the same patient so that we have a variety from which to choose. We accept full-body images, as well as shoulder shots; we’d also like to see poses with gestures demonstrating the internal happiness that a beautiful smile creates.
• Have your photographer call an AACD Art Director at 608.222.8583 or 800.543.9220, so they can talk about the design techniques of your submission.
• A signed photo release form is required. It must be signed by all parties; the patient/model, dentist, laboratory technician, and the photographer. Contact Tracy Skenandore at 800.543.9220, e-mail to request a photo release form.
   

All approved cover submissions, require a clincial case article to be written regarding the cover case.
